Today in eco-history: Deadly Texas City disaster

On April 16, 1947, a fire broke out aboard a freighter igniting approximately 2,300 tons of ammonium nitrate (a compound used to make dynamite) in the ship's hold. Texas City exploded.

Community, union unite to save jobs at GE plant

General Electric recently announced that it slated the closure of its plant in Fort Edwards, N.Y., and intends to move the remaining plant operations to an undisclosed site.
