Sacramento votes to boycott Arizona

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - California's capital city last week joined a growing movement to boycott Arizona until its anti-immigrant law SB 1070 is repealed. The City Council here voted 6-1 June 15 to join the boycott. Two councilpeople were absent.

The council auditorium was full during the session. When Mayor Kevin Johnson asked boycott supporters to stand, fully 80 percent of the audience rose.

At the two meetings where the council discussed the resolution, residents of many races, religions and nationalities testified. Sacramento has been called the "most diverse city in the U.S."

Among the supporters was former Sacramento Police Chief Arturo Venegas Jr., who called the Arizona law the civil rights issue of today. "Will a boycott hurt Arizona?" Venegas asked the council. "Absolutely - that is the intent. However, the true intent is to repeal the racist law of Arizona."

Another supporter of the boycott was Marc Grossman, long-time spokesman for the United Farm Workers. He pointed out that UFW founder Cesar Chavez, whose family members were respected Arizona citizens for generations, would be a suspect under SB 1070, and required to show his papers. "As Cesar said in a somewhat different context, 'Boycott the hell out of them,'" Grossman concluded.

Representatives of the Sacramento Labor Council, the Japanese-American Citizens Council, the NAACP, the California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the Democratic Party and many other organizations added their voices to the call for boycott action.

The one opposing vote came from Councilman Robbie Waters, whose bid for another term had been defeated in the election the previous week.

  • Thanks Sacramento.

Boycotting AZ only raises the awareness of the issue that illegals are destroying the United States and the SW US in particular. It also exemplifies the ignorance of those that are ticked off about AZ-SB-1070. AZ Law's intent is to remove Illegal Aliens from Arizona; it is accomplishing said intent by leaps and bounds.

Those Illegals refusing to return to their LEGAL domicile are opting to head for those cities that have Boycotted AZ based on SB-1070.

Since California is falling apart and every additional Illegal erodes your state's fiscal stature even further, I hereby propose that Sacramento sponsor buses, aircraft, cars or mopeds to further facilitate those Illegals wanting to head for that 'most diverse' city.

Come to America Legally, fill out the paperwork and jump through the hoops like My dad and millions of others have and WE will welcome you. Otherwise, you are JUST a ILLEGALLY TRESPASSING dog to be removed by whatever Legal means necessary & AZ/ SB-1070 will be active as a LAW in late July 2010.

    Rock ON, Babes!

  • The Sacramento City Counsel voted to boycott Arizona, but that does not necessarily mean that a majority of the citizens of Sacramento approve of it.

  • Hey Ruby, get out there and help the citizens exercise some common sense and uphold the federal laws against illegal immigration. Illegal immigrants should be encouraged to move to Sacramento; and the out of work American citizens in Sacramento might try finding employment opening up from the illegal exodus from Arizona

  • By calling this law racist, you are infact the racist one.

BTW California, have you checked to see how many of our cops are Hispanic? Yeah, Hispanic cops hate Hispanics *rolls eyes*.

When you have a major earthquake, head north not east.....we wouldn't want you to compromise your boycott.

  • I believe the view that this law is racial is ignorant and onesided. They have obviously not actually read the actual bill or are just trying to get more votes from the majority of people who don't read them. This law makes anyone pulled over have to show documentation no mater what they look like. Actual illegals complain to try to stop their deportation which is the only voice heard by the sensationalism run news services. [Rant over]

  • I found an error in the reporting of this story. It referred to SB 1070 as an "anti-immigrant" law. The law has no effect on legal immigration, and the statement could be misleading. Please clarify that SB 1070 is an anti-illegal immigration law.

  • Has anyone read the bill? It is not anti-immigrant, it is anti illegal immigration. BIG difference. Read it. Compare it to the Federal law. If you still have issues you will need to boycott the USA.

  • Ironic comments from Grossman, given that Cesar Chavez and the UFW used to volunteer to help Border Patrol round up illegal immigrants who were undercutting their attempts to bargain for better wages.

Do the activist crowd ever ask American workers what they really think about this stuff?
