On this day in 1811, the largest slave uprising in United States history started in Louisiana, when German Coast sugar plantations workers revolted. The men marched toward New Orleans, armed with hand tools. As they went, they set numerous crops and plantations on fire and added others to their numbers.
The revolt consisted of somewhere between 300-500 people, according to Today in Labor History on Tumblr, and lasted for two days before it was halted by the military in a brutal fashion.
