The people of the United States are facing an assault from President Trump, Elon Musk, and the Republican Party trifecta that controls the three branches of government. The threats we face are unprecedented.
MAGA is weaponizing the state by attacking the press and many other institutions. Major newspapers and news outlets on television, radio, and the Internet are scaling back their content and opinions to curry favor and protect themselves. Colleges, universities, and various organizations are moderating their comments and projects to avoid angering the autocrat in the White House.
It is no accident that the U.S. Constitution enshrines the free press in the Bill of Rights as an institution essential to democracy. Moreover, by democracy, People’s World has always meant more than just the right to vote. The right to a decent living, a union in the workplace, universal health care, and full economic and political equality are also key characteristics of democracy.
The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, and many other outlets have shown reluctance to speak out and, in any case, do not hold a view nearly as expansive of what constitutes democracy as we do. Their opinion pages increasingly reflect the approved stances of the White House and its allies rather than addressing the needs of the working-class majority in this country.
People’s World, however, remains unafraid to speak out, as it has for more than 100 years. We are still here, proud and fearless, and thank you, our readers, for enabling us to say that. We have no corporate sponsors. We are proud and unafraid to be your voice.
Please, at this seminal moment, contribute to our 2025 fund drive with its goal of raising $200,000.
People’s World will not waste one penny of that money. It will go to you cementing in place your legacy – a legacy of maintaining an independent working-class press unafraid to tell the truth in this country. That legacy will be one you can always be proud of.
