NEW YORK—The Communist Party USA is welcoming the results of Tuesday’s midterm elections as a “decisive repudiation” of President Donald Trump and the MAGA movement, while warning that the coalition that delivered the wins must stay organized to defend them and push the new Congress to deliver.
In a statement released Thursday, the party said a left-center people’s coalition of organized labor, Black and Latino communities, faith groups, women, and other oppressed communities took control of both the House and the Senate, using the Democratic Party as its electoral vehicle.
The swing from Republican to Democratic across the country showed that voters rejected reaction, division, and repression, the party said.
“This result was not simply handed to the people, it had to be fought for and defended,” said Joelle Fishman, chair of the CPUSA’s Political Action Commission.
The statement cited the administration’s voter suppression, attacks on mail-in ballots, gerrymandering, and intimidation of immigrants.
“We reject the racist and repressive project promoted by MAGA which aimed to divide people by race, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, or religion,” said party co-chair Rossana Cambron.
Co-chair Joe Sims said the president’s red-baiting fell flat. “Trump’s anti-communist attacks failed, and voters were not swayed,” he said. Sims blamed the housing crisis, price gouging, and war-mongering on “capitalism and the pursuit of maximum profit,” which he called the “greatest threat” facing the country.
Months in the making
At the CPUSA’s National Committee meeting in New York in July, Sims told members that “everything revolves around defeating the MAGA forces,” naming labor rights, civil rights, women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, the environment, peace, and democracy itself as being at stake.
At the same meeting, Fishman launched the party’s “Solidarity Summer/Fall” campaign, which plugged members into the AFL-CIO’s Labor 2026 voter program and the coalition’s voting rights mobilizations.
In his July keynote, Sims also cautioned that the fight would not end on Election Day. “The day after, it’s likely we’ll have to fight to consolidate whatever victories occur,” he said.
That warning took on new weight as the vote approached. In a Nov. 2 article, party leader Eric Brooks wrote that there were “legitimate concerns that the Trump administration will not honor the vote.”
He cited fears of armed federal agents at polling places and a maneuver involving the House clerk that could keep newly elected Democrats from being seated, and called for a broad popular front to protect the results.
In the end, however, voters delivered such an overwhelming defeat to MAGA that Trump has been unable to substantially dispute the results so far.
Defending the vote
Thursday’s statement from the party says that vigilance must be maintained, though.
The fascist onslaught “has been blunted for now,” the party said, but there are still a few months before the new Congress is seated, leaving space for the White House to escalate its dangerous policies, whether that be further unleashing ICE or widening the war on Iran.
The CPUSA said people must respond with demands of their own in this moment, keeping up the momentum that led to the midterm wins.
Rising gas, grocery, and health care costs weighed heavily on voters, according to the statement, and they want action on prices, housing, and union rights. If people do not see concrete change, the party warned, their anger will be felt in the 2028 elections.
In a post on X, the party spelled out what it wants from the new Congress: an end to the war on Iran, no funding for Israel or the “Donroe Doctrine,” and the impeachment of Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.
It also called for restoring and expanding voting rights, overturning Citizens United, and codifying abortion rights at the federal level. Rounding out the list were demands to abolish ICE, remove Trump’s fascist advisor Stephen Miller from power, pass the PRO Act, raise the minimum wage, and create union jobs.
“Meet the demands of the people, not the billionaires,” Fishman said.
The CPUSA also reminded its members and allies that the election did not touch the root causes of Trumpism—inequality, precarious work, and the erosion of democratic rights under capitalism—and argued that only socialism can fully resolve them.
That view tracks with the party’s argument over the summer that a “socialist moment” is returning, especially among young people. Sims pointed to a 2025 poll showing 62% of adults under 30 favor socialism and urged Communists to run for office “under our own colors.”
