NEW HAVEN — Jarvis Tyner, executive vice chair of the Communist Party USA and a founder of the Black Radical Congress, will return to Connecticut to keynote the 32nd annual African American History Month celebration of the Peoples Weekly World on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 4:00 p.m. at the New Haven Peoples Center, 37 Howe St.
The event will honor three giants in the freedom struggle: Coretta Scott King, the first lady of the civil rights movement; Rosa Parks, mother of the civil rights movement; Constance Baker Motley, born and raised in New Haven, the first African American woman appointed to a federal judgeship.
The activist roots of these civil rights leaders plus projections for the next steps in the struggle for equality and peace will be highlighted. “Keeping their legacy alive will require each and every one to join hand-in-hand to march and fight to tear down the walls of injustice,” said the call to the event.
The program will include reflections by some who knew Parks and Motley, poetry and music. Children’s drawings on the theme, “What Would You Do If You Could Change the World?” drawn on Martin Luther King’s birthday, will be on exhibit. Homemade buffet dinner is included. Donation: $5.
