On this day in 1918 Pearl Baily was born. Baily, an actor and singer debuted in Philadelphia and at Harlem’s Apollo theater. She performed with Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington and appeared on Broadway in the 1946 production of St. Louis Women. The young actor pioneered in securing roles in TV and film. An African American production of Hello Dolly was one of her best known performances. Baily had her own show on ABC in 1970. In 1975 she was appointed a special ambassador to the United Nations. At the age of 67, the entertainer earned a bachelor’s degree in theology from Georgetown University. Baily died in 1990.
