DEFENDING PUBLIC WORKERS’ JOBS
A panel discussion with local representatives of public workers’ unions
The deepening economic crisis is threatening the jobs of public workers on the federal, state & local level. More layoffs & benefit cuts will not help improve our economic situation. How can we build a broad peoples’ coalition not only to save public sector jobs, but also to involve all levels of government in creating more employment & better working conditions? Is it time for Congress to pass a “New Deal” type jobs program?
Sat., March 28, 2 p.m.
THE MENTAL HEALTH INDUSTRY
Presentation & Discussion with Dr. Mazda Shirazi, MD, PhD, Ass’t Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine, Toxicology & Pharmacology, UA
The system that is supposed to provide mental health care in Arizona, & most everywhere else, is broken. Why is delivery of mental health care not in parity with other health care services? Why does it suffer from lack of continuity & overuse of medication? What is needed to correct this unjust situation?
Sat., April 11, 2 p.m.
THE ECONOMIC CRISIS
Presentation & Discussion with Jim Hannley, Registered Investment Advisor & Longtime Community Activist
The failure of the capitalist banking systems & the rash of company bankruptcies are forcing new thinking about our entire economic system. What exactly is going on & why is it happening now? Will the problems be solved if we leave it in the hands of bankers? What can a grassroots movement do to resolve the situation or at least soften the blows?
Sat., April 25, 2 p.m.
WE NEED A UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE PLAN!
Public Forum
Arizona health care workers, union & political leaders will lead a discussion on legislation to create a single payer system for all Americans. How can we build a local coalition that will do battle for this long overdue reform?
