Lester Rodney (1911-2009) is known as the journalist most responsible for helping break down the racial color line in American sports. He served as sports editor for the Daily Worker, a predecessor of People's World, from 1936 until 1958. He went on to serve as religion editor for the Long Beach Press-Telegram and continued to play sports, becoming a successful senior amateur tennis player in his 60s, ranking as the #1 or #2 player in his age group until retiring from competition in 1998. His biography, "Press Box Red," by Irwin Silber was published in 2003.
