The World Health Organisation said on Thursday it will stop using the term ‘swine flu’ after Egypt began slaughtering thousands of pigs.
WHO spokesman Dick Thompson said that the agriculture industry and the UN food agency felt that the term ‘swine flu’ was misleading.
‘Rather than calling this swine flu, we’re going to stick with the technical scientific name H1N1 influenza A,’ Mr Thompson said.
The H1N1 influenza virus originated in pigs but is now being spread directly between humans.
