On Jan. 5, 2016, President Obama gave a passionate speech that unveiled his new strategy to curb gun violence in America by calling for a “national sense of urgency” on the issue.
As the president stated: “We are the only advanced country on Earth that sees this kind of mass [gun] violence erupt with this kind of frequency… It doesn’t happen in other advanced countries. It’s not even close. And as I’ve said before, somehow we’ve become numb to it and we start thinking that this is normal.” (story continues after video)
His proposals focus on new background check requirements that will enhance the effectiveness of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), and greater education and enforcement efforts of existing laws at the state level.
People’s World took it to the streets to ask: What do you think it will take to curb gun violence, and what is it about America’s love of guns that prevents common sense gun regulation? Check out the video above to see what people had to say.
