Today in history: Birthday of Ruth Crawford Seeger

Today, July 3rd 1903 Ruth Crawford Seeger, step mother of Pete Seeger, was born. Ruth Seeger was an accomplished peoples artist in her own right, and was a folk singer, musician and an expert historian of the folk music tradition. Ruth Crawford Seeger was originally from East Liverpool OH, near Youngstown, and Wheeling W.VA,  In 1930 she was the first woman to win a Guggenheim Fellowship. She authored several books on folk music.

The Seeger children, including Peggy and Mike all went on to make major contributions. Ruth Crawford Seeger died in 1953.
