The Senate Democratic leadership has indicated that consideration of Fast Track trade legislation (HR-3005) may begin next week. While there is some language in the Senate bill that strengthens Trade Adjustment Assistance this Fast Track Bill still does not ensure that enforceable labor and environmental standards will be incorporated into trade agreements.
The AFL-CIO has set up a toll free number to call Senators on Fast Track: 877-611-0063. Tell the senators to vote no on the Fast Track legislation and support working families by including:
• enforceable workers’ right provisions in trade agreements
• an amendment to ensure that U.S. trade laws are protected by excluding changes in trade laws from Fast Track;
• an amendment to ensure that investor state issues (known as NAFTA’s chapter 11) don’t trump our health, safety and environmental laws.
