Dispatch from former People’s World Editor-in-Chief Tim Wheeler

Sequim, Wash.

As usual, I took a swig of coffee this morning and opened my computer to check the latest news in People’s World.

There, staring back at me, was the story I had just submitted this morning reporting on the “huge” uncommitted and write-in vote in the Washington State Presidential Primary demanding that President Biden speak out for a “Ceasefire in Gaza.”

I noticed that the editors had updated my story with the latest returns that 58,000, not 48,000, Democratic primary voters sent in their mail ballots marked “uncommitted,” a stunning 8.1% of the total.

So, I must add this well-edited story to the 10,000 stories I have written for People’s World since I first joined the staff of The Worker in January 1966—58 years ago.

I checked out other stories now posted in People’s World: There was Richard Green’s excellent report headlined “The road to Winning a House Majority Runs Through California.” I watched a video of Janice Rothstein explaining why she opened People’s World on her computer to read stories about the struggles of the working class ignored by the New York Times and Washington Post and became a recurring donor. Mark Gruenberg’s report on President Biden’s interview with the Teamsters Union is included.

People’s World editors John Wojcik and C.J. Atkins wrote an insightful analysis of President Biden’s imperialist war policy abroad and populist policy at home. It is a study of contradictions that is well worth reading.

As part of our celebration of the centennial of the founding of the Daily Worker in 1924, they featured another story from the Feb. 5, 2003, edition of the People’s Weekly World (predecessor of People’s World) headlined “Powell at U.N. Caught in Web of Lies.” It was a report of General Colin Powell’s U.N. speech about Iraq’s non-existent “weapons of mass destruction” to justify the Bush-Cheney invasion of Iraq.

I wrote it!

It takes dollars to keep our People’s World online. I see the bar graph showing that so far, we have raised $60,000 of the $125,000 in our special fund drive for the PW. This money is the lifeblood of all our struggles for workers’ rights to organize and strike, racial and gender equality, democracy, and socialism. And yes, voting rights to defeat Trump in November!

Please dig deep and donate HERE so we can finish the Fund Drive by May Day! And consider becoming a recurring donor like Janice Rothstein to sustain the great work over the long haul.

I have already given $200. I will donate another $100 today. I pledge to give $1,000 during this drive. Humor me! Open your wallet and your heart for People’s World.

In solidarity,

Tim Wheeler
