DETROIT – More than 30 “sit downers” were taken away by police this morning after blocking traffic across Mack Ave on Detroit’s east side, chanting “$15 and a union.” The action occurred in front of a McDonald’s restaurant.
As they were taken away hundreds of supporters chanted “We want $15 and we want it now.”
People are tired of slave wages and part time hours, protesters said. “We’re not going to give up until we get a union,” said Pastor W.J. Rideout.
Sitting down in the “spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King and Fannie Lou Hammer, we’ll get off the street when justice comes,” added the Rev Charles Williams ll.
The action was orderly and well planned with the police being notified in advance.
A recent ruling by the National Labor Relations Board that corporate McDonald’s is responsible for what happens in individual franchises has buoyed the spirits of fast food workers here and around the nation.
