Today in 1965 in the presence of Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks and others, President Lyndon Johnson passed the Voting Rights Act. The Voting Rights Act forbid the discriminatory voting practices against African Americans and Latinos in the South and South West.
It has been renewed five times, most recently in 2006. The GOP and tea party are attempting to undo the goals of the Voting Rights Act by voter suppression efforts throughout the country.
