Congressional Progressive Caucus to host series on foreign policy options
WASHINGTON—Congressional Progressive Caucus Co-Chairs Rep. Raúl Grijalva and Rep. Lynn Woolsey announced an ongoing series of forums that will engage members of Congress in discussions about foreign policy options that make sense in light of today’s global security challenges, called “Seeking Global Security.”
With Afghanistan emerging as the first major test in the Obama administration’s efforts to secure global stability, the Congressional Progressive Caucus has chosen to open with the comprehensive, six-part series “Afghanistan: A Road Map For Progress.” This series is non-partisan and will feature leading experts on the region who offer a diverse range of perspectives, both U.S. and international.
The first forum in the Afghanistan series, “Historic Perspective on Afghanistan, its People and their Cultures” will occur in Room 2257 of the Rayburn House Office Building on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at 2:30 p.m.
Congressional Progressive Caucus has 77 members.
“As new security and foreign policy challenges arise and require us to reexamine long-standing national defense problems, the CPC will host periodic briefings and policy discussions that will present a broadly-defined concept of national security brought forth by experts from outside of Congress,” the CPC said in a statement.
“Our goal is to develop a fresh framework for understanding our national challenges in today’s global security environment.”
In a working outline for the project the CPC offered three areas of emphasis: looking at all tools available including political, economic, social and military tools, security policies must address the safety of people across borders, as well as the safety of people within borders, and “needs are equally important and simultaneous; they must not be posed as trade-offs in policy nor in budgets.”
